The short answer

After you arrive, you must tell your sponsor within 10 days, and again within 10 days of every change of address. The sponsor then validates you in SEVIS, the government database that records J-1 holders. IENA, a designated sponsor, warns that your visa and DS-2019 work authorization are not fully active until then.

Rule for everyone
Notify your sponsor within 10 days after arriving in the US
Address changes
Report to your sponsor within 10 calendar days
Cultural Vistas deadline
Report within 5 days of arrival
IENA deadline
Own clock runs from the DS-2019 start date, the program rule from arrival
Before the SSA visit
IENA: validate at least 3 business days first

Validating your SEVIS record

You can be admitted at the airport and still have a step left. The step is SEVIS validation, and it happens after you land, with your sponsor, not with a border officer. This page explains what it is, how the deadlines differ, and what waits on it. The arrival hub lists the rest of your first days.

The short version

  1. Find your sponsor’s name and telephone number on your DS-2019.
  2. Tell your sponsor within 10 days after you arrive in the US.
  3. Log in to your sponsor’s portal and report your US address.
  4. Wait for the confirmation email from your sponsor.
  5. Tell your sponsor about every change of address within 10 calendar days.

What is SEVIS validation?

SEVIS is the electronic database that records people on F, M and J visas and their dependents who enter the US. Your sponsor issues the DS-2019, and the form must be SEVIS-generated.

Cultural Vistas, a designated J-1 sponsor, uses validation to confirm your program participation in SEVIS, on top of the 10-day program rule. IENA, another sponsor, warns that an admitted J-1 holder’s visa and DS-2019 work authorization are not fully active until validated. The practical point: do not assume that a stamp in your passport means you are ready to start work.

The DS-2019 is a controlled form that your program sponsor gives you. It lists the sponsor’s name and telephone number,. A lost or stolen form can be reprinted in SEVIS.

Exchange visitor visa: what to obtain first

A SEVIS-generated DS-2019 is required when you apply for the J-1 exchange visitor visa. Sponsors and participants follow set steps for paying SEVIS fees and obtaining the visa before entry. Validation comes after all of that, once you are in the US.

Deadlines: the rule and your sponsor’s version

The program rule is the same for everyone. Sponsors must tell you before departure that you have to notify them within 10 days after you arrive in the US, and within 10 days after you secure or change housing. A separate rule in 22 CFR 62.10 asks you to report changes of phone number, email address and US address to your sponsor within 10 calendar days.

Tell your sponsor about each change of phone, email or US address within 10 calendar days.

Sponsors set their own clock for validation itself. Two examples, each from that sponsor’s own page:

Sponsor What it asks Source
Cultural Vistas Report within 5 days of arrival
IENA Report your US address within 10 days of the DS-2019 start date (program rule: 10 days from arrival)

Follow the shorter of the program rule and your own sponsor’s instruction. Sponsors must give you a 24/7 contact number and the State Department toll-free help line number before you leave.

How to validate, step by step

Sponsors run this through their own portals, so the screens differ. The common pattern is below.

  1. Find your sponsor’s name and telephone number on your DS-2019.
  2. Log in to your sponsor’s portal and report your current US address. IENA requires this through your IENA user account.
  3. Complete the validation in the portal. Cultural Vistas asks you to log in to its portal for this.
  4. Wait for confirmation. IENA sends a confirmation email after a successful validation.
  5. Report every later change of address within 10 calendar days.

Sponsors must also keep a monthly schedule of personal contact with you, by phone, email or in person, and document it. Answer those messages.

Can I check my SEVIS status myself?

Ask your responsible officer. You check your current SEVIS status by talking to that officer. For Work and Travel, your sponsor’s officer plays that role, and the sponsor’s name and telephone number are on your DS-2019.

A SEVIS user manual explains procedures step by step, and each SEVIS page has a help icon. Contact your sponsor if the confirmation email does not arrive.

What waits on validation

Your Social Security number and your work authorization both wait on it.

Social Security number. Cultural Vistas tells participants to wait at least 10 days after arrival and 2 business days after validation before the Social Security office visit. IENA asks for validation at least 3 business days before you apply, or the application may be delayed. The full process is on the Social Security number page.

Work. For IENA participants, DS-2019 work authorization is not fully active until validation. Exchange visitors may work when the work is part of their approved program, which includes summer work travel. A J-1 holder may only do the activity on the DS-2019 or one the regulations allow for the category. An employer may not knowingly employ a J-1 participant outside the approved program. For Form I-9, only participants with employment authorized under their program may use the DS-2019 as a document. They enter the DS-2019 program end date as the date employment authorization expires. The arrival hub and I-94 page cover the other papers you carry.

Do not mix it up with the travel signature

A different validation exists. If you leave the US mid-program and return, you need a travel validation signature on your DS-2019 from your sponsor before you go. That is a travel signature, not arrival validation.

Also check the dates. You may not arrive more than 30 days before the program start date on your DS-2019. Summer Work and Travel lasts up to four months, and extensions are not permitted. After the program ends, the grace period to leave the US is 30 days.

What your sponsor must do

Sponsors carry duties that protect you. They must make sure your activities match the category and activity on your DS-2019. They report a change in your US address or work site in SEVIS within 10 business days after you tell them. They must give you a copy of the State Department’s Summer Work Travel Participant Letter before departure.

The program is for full-time students at accredited post-secondary institutions outside the US. Participants from countries outside the visa waiver group must be placed in a job before entry. Sponsors keep program records for at least three years after the program ends, and they must cooperate with State Department or DHS inquiries.

Fees and consequences

The I-901 SEVIS fee is separate from visa fees. For Summer Work and Travel the fee is $35, per the ICE fee table seen 2026-10-20. Entering without having paid brings a Form I-515A from CBP, which allows 30 days to pay. Failure to pay within 30 days means the State Department terminates the SEVIS record, with the comment “Fee Payment Fraud Alert”. The SEVIS fee page covers payment.

Break the program rules and the sponsor can end your program. Sponsors must tell you that they will terminate the programs of participants who fail to comply with listed regulations. For just cause, the sponsor enters it in SEVIS and you must leave the United States immediately.

Questions new arrivals ask

How to check SEVIS validation?

Ask your sponsor. SEVIS status is checked by talking to your responsible officer. Your DS-2019 lists your sponsor's name and telephone number. IENA, a designated sponsor, emails a confirmation after you validate.

Can students check SEVIS status?

Not directly. The route is to talk to your responsible officer. For Work and Travel, that officer works for your sponsor, whose telephone number is on your DS-2019.

What is the 30-day grace period for J-1 status?

After your exchange program ends, you have a grace period of 30 days to depart the United States. Extensions of Summer Work and Travel participation are not permitted.

Do I have to validate if my visa is already stamped?

Yes. IENA, a designated sponsor, warns that a stamped J-1 and admission to the US still leave your DS-2019 work authorization not fully active until validated in SEVIS, and the program rule requires you to notify the sponsor within 10 days of arrival. Cultural Vistas asks for it within 5 days.

How soon after arriving must I contact my sponsor?

Within 10 days of arrival, under the program rules. Sponsors can ask sooner. Cultural Vistas, a sponsor, asks for a report within 5 days.

What happens if I do not follow the program rules?

Sponsors must tell you that they will terminate the programs of participants who break listed program rules. A sponsor that ends your program for just cause enters it in SEVIS, and you must leave the United States immediately.
